We feel we are in control because it gives us command over our lives. Yet, unseen forces are at work in the background which includes conscious and unconscious thoughts and free will. Struggling appears to be pointless at some points of our life because it does not change any outside circumstances, but makes matter worse.
The author Olga Alexander in his book The Noveau Riche has depicted this philosophy of life very beautifully using the different characters of the story. Bernadette, who is doing her job of a nurse and living her life peacefully, encounters Mr. Patrick Peterson and then day by day, her life changes so significantly, that she had never imagined. She thinks Mr. Peterson came for her rescue and so she fell in love with him. But after a few events, she discovers how she is a part of the game that Mr. Peterson plays on him. Then she meets Dr. Tobias but due to circumstances, she had to stop seeing him. Meanwhile, she keeps loving the first love of her life “her rare flower”, which is suspense about which you will know when you read the book.
I also liked the way that the author has presented the series of events in the cast’s lives where things sometimes go totally opposite to what we planned in the first place. Here, Bernadette, like any other girl in her 20s has plans about her marriage. But due to circumstances, her marriage goes exactly opposite of hers. But she bears all the pain for her “rare flower”.
The death of Pamela Anderson totally shook the life of Bernadette. Bernadette, who lived a life of orphan all those years, finally got to know that she is not an orphan but has a family. She got an inheritance from her father and by her mother. Also, she got a brother who she never knew existed.
After a sequence of events, she married Dr. Tobias, who died after a few months of marriage. But she had already given birth to two twin boys. But the twist appears when tests prove that Dr. Tobias is not the biological father of boys. Who is their father? You will find it in the book.
Meanwhile, Frederick keeps helping Bernadette. Why is he helping her? That is a good thrill in the novel. Or moreover who is he helping? It is because sometimes his ways of helping are mysterious.
Meanwhile, Bernadette’s “rare flower” grows and this character is beautifully explained in the novel. Although, Patrick was Bernadette’s first love, but circumstances made her move on from him. She finally found the love who she believes love her in the way she wants to be loved and most importantly respects her. The way the novel ends is so sweet.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The author has an engaging writing style and I really liked irony used in it. But there were few errors which upset me and this is why I cut one point. I would like to recommend this book to adults and not children because of the sexual content which is actually very mild and kind of important for the story. Being an avid reader, I really loved the book.
